This  innovative,  heavy  duty,  universal tool grinding machine was

designed   and   developed    specifically   for  grinding   all   types 

of  stabiliser  and  drill  pipe,  drill  heads,  hydroclean bars, fishing

tools,  mills,   reamers   and  the   day  to  day  requirements  of  oil

industry   original   equipment   manufacturers   and   the  needs of

regrind and repair shops.

It is not an  adaptation  of  a conventional  grinding  machine  but a

specific  design following  detailed market research by listening to

manufactures  and  users  of  drilling  tools.  And  the repair shops,

what could be incorporated to make a machine more efficient and

user  friendly  when  it  comes to a tooling regrind.  We asked what

they  wanted  to  regrind,  what  are their  maximum  and  minimum

sizes. Did they want a manual machine or CNC or both.

So, what did we do about it?

For starters, our  customers  had told us they wanted a heavy duty,

rugged  machine  capable of carrying heavy work pieces between

centres.  The Yorky weighs  in at 27,500 pounds (12,500kg) with a

work  piece  capacity  of 11,000 pounds (5000kg)  A longer  travel

was  needed  but the machine  still  had  to  be  compact, we  offer

120”  (3010mm)  between  centres  and  traverse  the  wheel head

instead  -  no  more  40ft  (12 metre)  drill  tubes  traversing up and

down the workshop!

The  heavy  duty   work   head   carries   a  spindle  bore   of  12.2” 

(310mm)   to   enable   pipes   to   pass   through.   This  is proven

technology  as used  on  our hollow spindle lathes for many years. 

Following the finalisation of designs, we built a prototype machine

to encompass all we had learned and upon completion presented

 to   a   repair   shop   for   evaluation  purposes  gaining  valuable 

experience prior to series production.
